- Attested in the Cairo Geniza documents, cited in A Dictionary of the Arabic Material of S.D. Goitein's A Mediterranean Society p. 213. This meaning is of course a prerequirement for the development of the meaning window (which is an artificial 19th-century creation and does not exist in the dialects; however the word is found in the first meaning in some dialects, in Anatolia “Luke: Öffnung an der Wand als Ausgang für das Ofenrohr” in Behnstedt, Peter, Woidich, Manfred (2012) Wortatlas der arabischen Dialekte – Band II: Materielle Kultur (Handbook of Oriental Studies – Handbuch der Orientalistik; 100/II) (in German), Leiden, The Netherlands: Brill, , →ISBN, page 75 citing an unpublished master’s thesis, and in Baḥrain “way out, exit”).
