Etymology

@კვარია, is Kelauradze's etymology regular? Also, I don't like deriving the Georgian currency from the Persian coin used on southern seas. It could have developed within Georgian from "treasure, something valuable, brocade, belt" attested in Shahname, which could have developed from "string, cord". @Gubazes, please create Laz ლორი (lori) from my BLS. The vocalism is regular. For nouns, word-final r in Zan typically turns into ǯ, but there are numerous exceptions such as *kor-, *ḳwer-, *c̣ḳ(i)ar-, etc..

But if this word has external comparisons, then I'd be warry of reconstructing that root. For example in Mingrelian we have ლებია (lebia), which you could argue regularly matches ლობიო (lobio). Or for example ბულეკი (buleḳi) regularly matches ბოლოკი (boloḳi), etc. კვარია (talk) 13:49, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

Right, because those could be old(ish) borrowings into Zan and Georgian after the breakup of their unity, which then underwent the same sound changes as the inherited stock. Vahag (talk) 16:39, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
