- I don't think it is derogatory. Yes it is used in slightly negative contexts, but that's because the sea has the nature of being violent(?) threatening(?) towards things that go inside it. The emphasis on "saltwater" probably makes it a bit more negative than simply 海 (hoi2), since saltwater also corrodes objects and kills life. "brine (sense 2)" might be a more accurate gloss.– wpi (talk) 04:07, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
