The following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process (permalink).
It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.
SoP? Possibly a common collocation, but then so is "stupid bastard". Equinox ◑ 13:01, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
- Delete. I have copied the citation to [[faggot]]. If this entry is deleted, the search engine would take the user to [[faggot]]. I will add a link from flaming in the citation to an appropriate target definition as well. DCDuring TALK 13:09, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
- Delete, precisely per nom. bd2412 T 16:53, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
- FYI Flaming faggot has a specific origin: "Faggot" is an archaic term for a stick, or more recently, for a cigarette. So, contrary to SoP flame originally was in a literal sense, and for many people it still conjures up the same visual imagery. I don't know if this justifies the entry in wiktionary. 73.71.174.75 18:01, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
- FWIW I object to Wiktionary entries where the definition fails WT:CFI but they have interesting etymologies or pronunciations. That to me seems to be beyond the job of a dictionary. In this case I'm not sure you're right anyway. Renard Migrant (talk) 18:06, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
- But the supposed "flaming sticks -> homosexual" origin is a myth, isn't it? Equinox ◑ 18:49, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, it is. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 19:37, 13 March 2016 (UTC).
- Faggot should really explain the sense development from bundle of sticks to homosexual (and the other meanings also). Or if unknown, we should put that. Renard Migrant (talk) 20:01, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
- OED says it's a development of the obsolete derogatory term for a woman (because gay men tend to be seen as feminine, presumably). Equinox ◑ 19:19, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
- And where does that definition come from? Incidentally I discovered last week my local library has a copy of the OED, it's quite nice living 15 minutes walk from the city centre of a major city most of the time. Renard Migrant (talk) 13:45, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

- Flaming has the definition "Extremely obvious; visibly evident. Typically of a homosexual male". So... yeah. Delete. Renard Migrant (talk) 18:03, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
