Talk:hold

English edit

The "reserve" meaning is quite unclear. Is it like calling the owner of a restaurant and saying "Hold a table for us, please"? In that case, you can add "reserveren" for Dutch. If it's like entering a restaurant and leaving one person of the company at a table to tell other people to take another table, while the rest of the company goes to the toilet, you can add "vrijhouden". — This unsigned comment was added by 193.190.253.146 (talk) at 17:52, 6 May 2008.

But as to the sorcerers, they are believed to obtain the services of devils by offerings, by sinful acts, and by transgressions, [...] namely, to neglect prayers and fasting, to hold bloodshed, the committing of incestuous marriages, and similar wicked acts to be licit.

parliamentary usage edit

We're missing the noun sense "Senator X put a hold on the bill." - -sche (discuss) 18:09, 19 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

hold the onions edit

I can't quite fit "give me a hotdog with mustard, hold the onions" into our definitions. Is this a different subsense? Keith the Koala (talk) 19:28, 5 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

I agree it is missing. Perhaps add "to hold back; to omit (from food being prepared)"? Is it only used with food? Equinox 19:34, 5 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Merriam-Webster has "to keep back from use" with a usex about holding a room and one like Keith's about a hotdog. Dictionary.com has "to omit from the usual order or combination" and later "to set aside or reserve" with a usex about tickets. So: "to hold back from use"? - -sche (discuss) 21:43, 5 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

I added a new sense to accommodate this meaning. I recognize that it may more properly belong as a sub-sense to some other one, and if anyone has evidence which other sense it belongs under, by all means they should move or change what I wrote. IMO the main thing is that such a sense exists, and belongs in here somewhere. :) TooManyFingers (talk) 21:56, 4 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
