Talk:mutation
Genetics definition
editThe definition "a change in the sequence of DNA within a chromosome that results in a new trait not found in the parent type" is not correct.
- Some mutations have phenotypic consequences, others do not. "...that results in a new trait not found in the parent type" should be removed.
- Mutable genetic material does not exist only in chromosomes. To include the genome of RNA viruses and extrachromosomal material like plasmids, "within a chromosome" should also be removed.
That doesn't leave much behind. I changed it to "any heritable change in the base-pair sequence of genetic material, namely DNA (or RNA in the case of some viruses)". Dr d12 18:42, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
Definition of "Genetic Material"
editI have removed infomation about what genetic matterial is and enabled access to infomation on what genetic material is by linking to the definition of genetic material (87.80.103.44 16:31, 28 January 2010 (UTC))
Replacing one 2-letter word with another, "of"
editIts one small change but I hope the result of the change is a great reduction of the quantity of ambiguity in the genetics definition. (87.80.103.44 16:39, 28 January 2010 (UTC))
