Wu reading of 老師 edit

Hi,

You have modified the Wu reading of 老師老师 (lǎoshī) in diff from "3lau sr" to "1'lau sr". Can you confirm this pronunciation from another source, please?

According to Minidict is "lau", 上 (rising) and it's a voiced consonant, so it should be "3lau", not ""1'lau" according to Wiktionary:About_Chinese/Wu#Conversion_from_MiniDict_tone_notation. Please note also that we that the pronunciation module Module:wuu-pron only works for Shanghainese, not Suzhou or other forms of Wu. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 07:38, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Atitarev Hi Anatoli, As I speak Shanghainese and I have been living in Shanghai since my childhood, I am very sure that 老师 is tone 1 in Shanghainese. It's unknown why it has an irregular tone sandhi, but some guess that this tone is from some southern Mandarin.(Personally, I guess this is from its frequent use after surnames, or from an earlier tone sandhi mode) Overall, this pronunciation is the most familiar one in Shanghai, while the theoretical pronunciation is almost never heard (except for those with an accent of other Wu dialect, but rare even in this case). As for the source, you may check it in Qian Nairong (钱乃荣)'s 上海话大词典, on page 217. His book provides two tones, but the tone 1 reading is the first, which means this is more common. Public audio resources can also prove this pronunciation. Hope this can help you. 辛时雨 (talk) 12:23, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much! So the other reading is also valid but is less common? I will add it back as an alternative. (BTW, I didn't get the ping because {{ping}} and the signature should be in the same edit.) --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 22:47, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
