Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary! We notice that you're making changes anonymously. Although this is perfectly all right, we'd like to encourage you to take the time to create an account and sign in to it when editing – it's free and easy. A list of good reasons to do so is at Wiktionary:Why create an account?.

Please note that we are not Wikipedia. If you have edited there, then it won't be very difficult for you to find your way here, but there are a number of differences. For example, Wiktionary is case-sensitive: Kind (German) is not the same as kind (English, Danish, Dutch etc.) Also note that Wiktionary uses no parenthetic disambiguation, so where Wikipedia might have separate articles on Mercury (planet), Mercury (element), and Mercury (mythology), Wiktionary will only have one entry on Mercury which addresses proper noun uses, and an entry on mercury which addresses regular noun uses.

Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Questionable entries will be listed for verification, and, if they fail that process, will be deleted. Also, keep in mind our copyright policies: don't copy material from copyrighted sources here. Such additions will be deleted on sight. Submissions from IP addresses are looked at more closely, unfortunately, so please take a minute to create an account.

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question in the appropriate discussion room or ask me on my talk page.

পানই

edit

Hi, Bangladesh IP. Since you seem to be editing related entries and likely know more about Middle Bengali, please take a look at my recent creation পানই (panoi) if you could add more and expand the entry. Thanks! Svartava (talk) 12:43, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. However, I am in no way anything more than an amateur researcher of the etymons of my language, Bengali. I sometimes also edit other language pages, like Hindi or Persian, and try to add PIA, PIIr and/or PIE etymons to those Bengali or Sanskrit words which are missing one (**Note that I assume the derivations and sound changes from the forms of various given PIE words, and also the phonological rules in Wikipedia, which are very elaborate and sensical to be honest.) Please try to correct any of my mistakes (but do not (hopefully) mistake yourself!) as everyone does mistakes.
Now for your inquiry, your newly created page seems accurate to me, as I also checked Sukumar Sen's dictionary. 103.112.54.39 13:03, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Could you add Sukumar Sen's dictionary under the references? I was having a hard time finding the word in it. Svartava (talk) 13:14, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oops, I mistook Suniti K. Chatterji for Sukumar Sen. I actually found it in:
Chatterji, Suniti Kumar (1926) The Origin and Development of the Bengali Language, volume 510, Calcutta: Calcutta University Press 103.112.54.39 13:22, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hey, I find the senses at দুর্দান্ত (durdanto) quite interesting. You could add quotes for the senses, maybe? In my opinion, it would be a good candidate for FWOTD. Svartava (talk) 14:40, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am trying to find suitable quotations, even if from pieces of writing. You have proposed a nice idea. So far, only the first set of meanings has gotten usage examples, and I may contact others like @Sbb1413 for adding good quotes. 103.112.54.39 17:46, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

I created this new account: @Vyutpatti. Other users can discuss in that account's talk page as well. 103.112.54.39 15:15, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

This is the discussion page for an anonymous user who has not created an account yet or who does not use it. We therefore have to use the numerical IP address to identify them. Such an IP address can be shared by several users.
