Welcome
editWelcome!
Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
- Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
- Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including, there is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
- The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
- We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.
Again, welcome!
Hi :D I just noted that you've made a few edits here, so I thought of providing you a few welcome notes.
Our etymology guideline page is WT:ETY, and specifically on PIE Wiktionary:About Proto-Indo-European. This latter was mostly written by Dbachmann which unfortunately stopped editing here soon after, and which we, as you can see, do not strictly adhere to ad this moment.
I'm very much in favor of using the symbols <w> and <y> instead of <u̯> and <i̯>, especially in the page titles, because it's both easier to type and more intuitive to guess the sounds they refer to ([w] and [j]). Most of our existing entries are using those symbols, and it would be appreciated if you would to.
We primarily edit stuff on the page Appendix:List of PIE roots, which was originally compiled on Wikipedia (mostly per Pokorny, we found lots of errors inside) and afterward slowly extracting into the individual appendix pages providing more thorough treatment. So far, some 5% of the listed reconstructions are covered. Creating those appendix pages with full list of reflexes and analysis is extremely time-consuming, as you'll probably figure out on your own if you decide to join that glorious enterprise.
So far the entries on the verbal roots are in the worse shape. I was thinking of formatting them by using the same scheme as LIV, i.e. by a specific conjugation class, and then a list of daughters which reflect it. My knowledge is of PIE verbal inflection is limited and I don't really have the confidence to do it, except in some well-known cases. Of ancient IE languages, I only know of inflection in Sanskrit, Latin and OCS.
Also; I've started recently Appendix:PIE declension, which I hope can be reused at the WP article on PIE noun, to illustrate common PIE declensional classes. You are free to contribute there too if you'd like.
Cheers! --Ivan Štambuk 20:28, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hi! Nice to meet you here as well, and thanks for all that information! I'm not sure whether I will do a lot here, there is so much I'm planning to do on Wikipedia – and besides, I have a life. It's tempting, anyway, seeing the poor covering of PIE at the moment. Good luck with your work, and perhaps I'll do a bit as time allows. Cheers --Anypodetos 07:57, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- There's no consensus as there was no discussion. I created most of the PIE appendices and changed most of <i̯> and <u̯> to <y> and <w>. You think that we should do the opposite? --Ivan Štambuk 14:07, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't mean i̯ vs. y (two notations of the glide – I agree that y is easier to type and read, and probably more widely used in English speaking regions), I meant ei vs. ey (diphthong vs. vowel+glide). I'd prefer ey but I seem to recall that most people argued for ei at Wikipedia. --Anypodetos 17:34, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- It's just silly to have 2 symbols to denote the same thing. <y> and <w> IMHO more emphasize their inherent glidal character, as opposed to <i> and <u> which brings reminiscence of Brugmannian times. --Ivan Štambuk 18:29, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- How's this? However, I can't really figure out what to do with the old entry. Deletion proposal? --ἀνυπόδητος 08:32, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Deleted. --Ivan Štambuk 10:13, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Another one: What's the difference between Category:Proto-Indo-European verbs and Category:Proto-Indo-European roots? --ἀνυπόδητος 08:43, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Should all be recategorized to the latter category. root = "verbal root". --Ivan Štambuk 10:13, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
New Transwiki's
editHi! Thank you for contributing many ISO guides like Transwiki:ISO 639:z from Wikipedia. However, they are not copied over correctly, in that none of the contributor's history was copied when you copied them over. I wonder if you know about this following Transwiki form: [[1]]. All of these should be re-imported using that form, with the checkmark on "Copy all history revisions for this page". Ok? Goldenrowley 02:13, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hi! The edit history is on the talk pages (e.g. Transwiki talk:ISO 639:a). I tried to use the transwiki form, but I get the error message "The action you have requested is limited to users in one of the groups: Administrators, Importers, Transwiki importers". Please tell me if the edit history wasn't copied correctly, and what I should do next. Thanks, --ἀνυπόδητος 18:15, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- I think as you copied the history, manually, it is passing the guidelines. Thank you. Goldenrowley 07:22, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
