Welcome edit

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary!

If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects, (especially spelling variations) in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in w:CAT:MtW; request the full history import instead, at WT:ID.

Finally, you can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{wikipedia}}, or {{wikipediapar|pagename}}. Please do not create redirects to Wikipedia pages, though. They don't work.

We hope you enjoy editing Wiktionary and being a Wiktionarian. Dvortygirl 14:38, 11 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

At my request, Connel answered your question, but on my talk page. I asked him to address it because I wasn't quite sure, myself. —Dvortygirl 06:28, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. Very cool. --Hroðulf 10:15, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

robo- edit

Hi! I'm wondering why you tagged this for speedy deletion? It seems to have at least a reasonable number of hits, which I listed in the verification page? --Jeffqyzt 13:58, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cool! I removed the speedy delete tag. --Hroðulf 14:08, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mandarin Chinese edit

Hi, the RfD tag had been removed by Jonathan Webley, who is a sysop. He was ending the process. We don't seem to usually note that in the discussion, but ought to.

Anyway, I removed it again, RfD passed and entry struck. Thanks! Robert Ullmann 17:37, 16 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cool! Yes — unless we know the remover of the tag is acting with the intent to close a discussion as keep, it seems to the ordinary editor like an out-of-process tag removal. --Hroðulf 17:52, 16 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Translations edit

Hi there. In the English Wiktionary, only English words have a ===Translations=== section. Foreign language words mostly just have a translation into English instead of a definition (unless things get complicated, or there is no direct translation). This is to stop multiple translation tables getting out of step. SemperBlotto 13:56, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Format of entries edit

Thanks for your work in the Greek entries. We haven't had anyone working seriously on those for a while. That said, it would be a good idea to review standard entry layout. In particular, certain sections (such as etymology) are always placed before the definitions, while others are placed after the definitions. Also, we make a distinction between Derived terms (words in the same language as the entry) and Derivatives Descendants (which are in another language from the entry). Take a look at the formatting I did for your edits on ἄγγελος and εὖ for examples. And thanks again for your work! --EncycloPetey 22:45, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for cleaning up after me. I am afraid I tried to go from memory regarding WT:ELE. I will go through my recent contributions to see if I made the same error elsewhere. Thanks in particular for explaining the project's distinction between derivatives and derivations, as derivations don't seem to have made it into the layout guide yet. Are they the same as descendants? --Hroðulf 09:03, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you're right. It should be Descendants, not Derivations. --EncycloPetey 16:27, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Heading levels edit

Please remember that on Wiktionary, level two headings identify a language name. AFAIK, "==References==" is not a language.  :-)

Keep up the good contributions.

Interwiki links edit

You can save yourself some trouble by letting RobotGMwikt do the interwiki linking for you. It is usually much more accurate than human edits, for interwiki links. --Connel MacKenzie 15:13, 13 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
