Welcome edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Steel Blade 07:23, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Formatting edit

Hi, thanks for your contributions. Two small points: when working in foreign (non-English) languages, try to give definitions as glosses rather than full-sentence definitions. Also, for adding context labels you can use {{context}} with a language parameter. Have a look at the changes I made to oláh‎. Ƿidsiþ 13:22, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Discussions. edit

Per your edit to your user-page. You can either use the + button to create a new section with a heading, or you can use the [edit] buttons to edit a section. Just type below everyone else, use one more ":" than the person you are replying to.

so it looks like a reply. And sign your comments with ~~~~. Which makes a signature like: Conrad.Irwin 22:39, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Greek / Ancient Greek edit

Please be aware that we have a distinction between these. See changes I made to araknofóbia. Nadando 01:58, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hungarian entries edit

Hi, thank you for your Hungarian contributions. When you have a chance, please read Wiktionary:About Hungarian which is about how Hungarian entries should be added. Also, please review the changes I made to oláh, erdélyi, tót. Thanks. --Panda10 12:21, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Given names edit

Hi, it's good to see someone who is interested in given names. Please don't add pet forms to translation tables, one standard form of the name is usually enough. But variants and pet forms are easy to add in the language in question, see Fredde and Fredrik for example --Makaokalani 16:57, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the heads up. The only reason I added the pet forms too was because nowadays you may encounter them as proper given names as well, so I thought they were relevant. But I'll stick to the proper versions in the future then. ^^ Nederbörd 00:55, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Spårkanon edit

Hi Nederbörd!

I am interested to know how/where you found the Swedish translation for railgun, as I noticed there are no relevant google hits for "spårkanon". Med vänliga hälsningar //Diupwijk (talk) 11:49, 10 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
