Please stop adding wrong pronunciations!
editOn "militarily" you stressed the wrong syllable. On "media" you got the middle vowel wrong (and deleted an existing pronunciation that was fine). Equinox ◑ 15:00, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- Militarily is meant to be stressed on the first syllable in British English according to the Oxford Dictionary - for media, the existing one was wrong (it was | ˈɔːdiəns | when it's meant to be | ˈɔːdɪəns |) Qiu Ennan (talk) 15:07, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- By the way, do you mind if I put my pronunciation back for media? It corresponds to | ˈmiːdɪə | (the pronunciation given by the Oxford Dictionary) Qiu Ennan (talk) 15:11, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- I disagree and will start a discussion at WT:BP. Equinox ◑ 15:23, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- When I listen to your clips, you are stressing the second syllable of "militarily"; and your middle vowel in "media" sounds much more like /eɪ/. If you have a particular accent like (say) Hong Kong, you need to make this clear on your audio or it is very misleading. Equinox ◑ 15:25, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- I've listened to them again, and I don't think my pronunciation matches that IPA. Let's wait for other people to weigh in. By the way, I don't have a particular accent, I'm just pronouncing the words according to the IPA Qiu Ennan (talk) 15:30, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- We all have accents, and that is an inescapable fact. As a native British English speaker I have reverted all of these, as the recordings simply don't match how the words are actually said in the UK (in any region). Audio pronunciations where you specify a particular accent practically require that you actually do have that accent, as they're so difficult to get right. - My pronunciations match those given by the Oxford Dictionary, and if you're going to say they don't, then you must elaborate and explain which part does not. Besides, I do speak British English - so I do have this accent. Qiu Ennan (talk) 02:19, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi, just trying to help convey the problem a bit: Wiktionary is a descriptive source, which means that the listed IPA is a transcription of how people actually say a term, not a prescription for how they should say it. This means that if you add an audio pronunciation of a term you should say it the way you normally say the word, not by artificially conforming your pronunciation to whatever the OED (or Wiktionary itself) states. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 14:58, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- Oh okay, that's what I thought I should do, but then I feel like if I do that, my pronunciation might not match the standard one given? Qiu Ennan (talk) 00:50, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
- That's fine (and encouraged). Just add a note stating what accent it is. Theknightwho (talk) 00:57, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
- Okay; by the way, I don't think all the pronunciations I added were wrong (i.e. octane and homoeostasis), so can you reinstate them? I don't think those needed to be removed. Qiu Ennan (talk) 02:14, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Babel
editGreetings, would you add {{Babel}}
to your user page? It is not mandatory, but useful. --Dan Polansky (talk) 15:37, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- Sure, how do you do that? Qiu Ennan (talk) 15:39, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
- You place somethings like of
{{Babel|en|fr-4|de-2|ru-1}}
to your user page. At a minimum, you can use{{Babel|en}}
if applicable. --Dan Polansky (talk) 15:41, 30 October 2022 (UTC)- All right, I added it to my user page Qiu Ennan (talk) 15:47, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

Militarily
editIn , I hear something like "militali". No matter how hard I try, what I hear seems wrong. I listened to audio from M-W online for militarily and it sounded right. --Dan Polansky (talk) 17:07, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

Your L1
editWhat is your L1? And how would you feel about Englishman recording Chinese audio? Equinox ◑ 03:59, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
- I'm half-British, mate. And English is my first language. Also, yes, I wouldn't mind Englishmen recording Chinese audio if it was actually correct. Qiu Ennan (talk) 04:07, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
- Also, why did you revert my edit on 'temporarily'? Which part is wrong? Please explain. Qiu Ennan (talk) 04:08, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
- Wait, why did you block me again? That's ridiculous; I made two good-faith, helpful edits and that's vandalism? Qiu Ennan (talk) 04:16, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
