Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
  • If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.

You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 00:50, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Macau Cantonese

edit

Hi, please do not add Macau Cantonese unless you have access to a native speaker or can provide a source. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 04:03, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: Hello, I have access to native speakers. Wiikipedian (talk) 05:20, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Have you actually consulted them for the table on 能? I don’t think they would differ from Hong Kong on the usage of 得. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 06:16, 30 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Testing modules

edit

Hi, please do not test modules/templates in the main module/template spaces. You can test things out in a sandbox, like User:Wiikipedian/sandbox and/or Module:User:Wiikipedian. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 03:23, 31 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: Hello, requesting to change if h_rom and (find(h_rom, 'pfs=.') or find(h_rom, 'gd=.')) or h_audio then to if h_rom and (find(h_rom, 'pfs=.') or find(h_rom, 'gd=.') or find(h_rom, 'kuching=.')) or h_audio then at line 364 on Module:zh-pron to include the ability to transcribe the Hakka language as spoken in Kuching. I am not very interested in drafting up a transcription table as you suggested, at least for now, as I am more interested in recording the language, rather than standardizing it. I think adding the ability to transcribe the Kuching Hakka pronunciation in the existing Module:zh-pron and Module:hak-pron would suffice for now. Thank you. Wiikipedian (talk) 04:54, 31 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Using Guangdong romanization for Kuching Hakka doesn’t really work if we don’t know what your version of the romanization means, especially if the tone values differ from Meixian. If you’re not willing to document how you’re transcribing Kuching Hakka, I will not incorporate it into the module because it cannot be understood by others. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 05:52, 31 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Kuching Hokkien

edit

I've heard that Hokkien is the main Chinese dialect spoken in Kuching. Do you by any chance speak it? If you do, we can always add a datapoint for Kuching Hokkien in the dialectal tables. The dog2 (talk) 02:55, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@The dog2: Hello, I can understand it, but I'm not a "scholar" of it. Wiikipedian (talk) 03:36, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Should I add the entry? You don't need to be a scholar. You can just add the terms that you know. The dog2 (talk) 04:17, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: Actually, what I mean is that I do not know how they are written. Wiikipedian (talk) 04:22, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I see. Well, if you know how to say the words, then perhaps Justinrleung can guide you on how to find the right characters. Where Singapore Hokkien terms differ from the Hokkien in China or Taiwan, I sometimes get his help too. The dog2 (talk) 05:22, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
