Etymology edit
First attested as varnt in 1325. Compound of varen (“fern”) and hout (“rising deciduous forest”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted as eind (“end, edge”). Compare Boekend, Lieseind, Lieshout, Liessent and Ulvend.
