- (Utrecht) First attested as westbroick in 1394. Compound of Middle Dutch west (“west-, western”) and broec (“marsh, marshland”).
- (Limburg) First attested as Brock in 1803-1820. Compound of west (“west-, western”) and broek (“marsh, marshland”). The element west was added to distinguish the settlement from Oostbroek. See also Limburgish 't Grwat-Brook.
