From Middle High German twenge and Middle Low German dwenge (constraint, clamp), derived from Middle High German twengen (to squeeze, force, cram) (> modern German zwängen) and Middle Low German dwengen (to squeeze, press). Cognate with Danish tvinge and German Zwang.
