From Hindi भंडसाल (bhaṇḍsāl), from Sanskrit भाण्डशाला (bhāṇḍaśālā): भाण्ड (bhāṇḍa, goods) + शाला (śālā, house, building). Altered by folk etymology in English after bank, hall.
