Etymology 1

edit

Of uncertain origin. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰondo-, a metathesized form of *bʰudʰmḗn (bottom); compare Latin fundus (ground; foundation; estate, piece of land). The semantic development, in this case, seems to be "bottom" > "an object with a large floor" > "vessel", whence the other meanings.[1][2][3][4] However, this does not account for the retroflex cluster -ṇḍ-, characteristic of substrate borrowings (though the word's Vedic presence conversely increases the likelihood of Indo-European origin and dampens that of substrate origin).
