Either from Italian barca (boat, skiff)[1] or Late Latin barca (small watercraft),[2] ultimately from Ancient Greek βᾶρις (bâris, type of boat used in Egypt), itself from Egyptian bꜣjr (transport ship). Tosk variant varkë borrowed from Greek βάρκα (várka).
