Etymology

From Ancient Greek βαθύς (bathús, deep) + σφαῖρα (sphaîra, sphere). Genericization from the particular 1930s bathysphere named "Bathysphere". The name 'bathysphere' coined decades after the introduction of the device in the 1890s.
