Etymology

From bone +‎ seed, either directly as a description of the hard surface of the seeds, or indirectly as a calque of the name of its former genus, Osteospermum, from Ancient Greek ὀστέον (ostéon, bone) + Ancient Greek σπέρμα (spérma, seed).
