Etymology

Calque of Korean 섬짱깨 (seomjjangkkae)，chó (“dog”) +‎ đảo (“island”) +‎ tàu (“ship, extended meaning 'Chink'”). Many Chinese refugees came to Vietnam in boats during the Qing Dynasty and were known for transporting goods by boat.
