Calque of Korean 섬짱깨 (seomjjangkkae)chó (dog) +‎ đảo (island) +‎ tàu (ship, extended meaning 'Chink'). Many Chinese refugees came to Vietnam in boats during the Qing Dynasty and were known for transporting goods by boat.
