Etymology edit
From Middle Welsh kymhwys, or from Proto-Brythonic *kumpuɨs, from Latin compēnsus. By surface analysis, cym- + pwys (“weight, importance”). Cognate with Cornish kompes (“even, balanced, plain, accurate”).
