Borrowed from Swahili meza, from Omani Arabic ميز (mēz, “table”), from Persian میز (mêz), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (myʾzd /mēzd/, “sacrifice, offering meal; table”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *myázdʰas (“sacrificial oblation”), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁- + *dʰeh₁-. False cognate of Portuguese mesa.
