federal subject
English
editEtymology
editCalque of Russian субъект федерации (subʺjekt federacii).
Noun
editfederal subject (plural federal subjects)
- (government) A constituent entity of Russia, its top-level political division; it includes all federated entities: republics, krais, oblasts, cities of federal importance, an autonomous oblast, and autonomous okrugs, all of which are, constitutionally, equal subjects of the federation.
Usage notes
editAs a naturally potential hypernym above the cohyponyms of federated state, federal territory, and federal district, this English term could logically be used in reference to other federations besides Russia, but idiomatically it usually isn't. Instead, a collocation such as federated entity or federated administrative division serves that purpose.
