1. A natural fiber, similar to hemp, obtained from the leaves of the plant Furcraea andina and certain other plants of the genus Furcraea.

   • 2004, Gabriel García Márquez, Memoria de mis putas tristes:

     A las once fui a mis trámites de rutina en el baño, donde estaba su ropa de pobre doblada sobre una silla con un esmero de rica: un traje de etamina con mariposas estampadas, un calzón amarillo de malapodán^[sic] y unas sandalias de fique.

     At eleven o'clock I went to do my morning routine in the bathroom, where her poor clothes were folded on a chair with great care: a dress of etamina with stamped butterflies, yellow madapolam underwear and some fique sandals.
