Etymology

edit

Inherited from Middle French gascher (to waste, row), from Old French gaschier, gacher, gasser (to soil, spoil, waste) and gaschier, guaschier, waschier (to wash, soak), both from Frankish *waskan, *wascōn (to wash, bathe), from Proto-Germanic *waskaną (to wash), from Proto-Indo-European *wod- (wet). Compare related Italian guazzare (to splash, wallow), from the same Germanic root. Cognate with Old English wasċan (to wash). More at wash.
