French edit

Etymology edit

Apparently from *comperger, a slang form of compter (to count, to reckon).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ɡɑ̃.bɛʁ.ʒe/
  • (file)

Verb edit

gamberger

  1. (slang) to think hard
    • 1997, “Demain, c’est loin”, in L'École du micro d'argent, performed by IAM:
La pauvreté, ça fait gamberger, en deux temps, trois mouvements / On coupe, on compresse, on découpe, on emballe, on vend
Poverty really makes you think, and before you know it / You cut, you compress, you chop up, you wrap, you sell

Conjugation edit

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written gamberge- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
