From Proto-Germanic *gahaitaną (to promise), equivalent to ġe- +‎ hātan. Cognate with Old Saxon gihêtan, Old High German giheizan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (gahaitan).
