From Malay gempa bumi, from calque of Sanskrit भूमिकम्प (bhūmikampa, earthquake), from भूमि (bhūmi, earth) +‎ कम्प (kampa, quake), as gempa (tremor) +‎ bumi (earth). Compare with Hindi भूकंप (bhūkamp, earthquake), Marathi भूकंप (bhūkampa, earthquake).
