From Proto-Malayic *hiaŋ, from Proto-Malayo-Chamic *hiaŋ, from Proto-Malayo-Sumbawan *hiaŋ, from (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qiaŋ.

First attested in the Kedukan Bukit inscription, 683 AD, as Old Malay [script needed] (hiyaṃ), found in the title of Dapunta Hiang.
