Borrowed from French hydrogène. Coined by Lavoisier and his team, from Ancient Greek ὑδρο- (hudro-, water) (from ὕδωρ (húdōr, water)) + -γενής (-genḗs, producer of) (from γεννάω (gennáō, to bring forth)). Synchronically analyzable as hidro- +‎ -geno.
