Etymology

edit

Compound of jacht (haste) or jachten (to hurry) +‎ schip (ship). Perhaps a modification of Middle Dutch jageschip. Although jachtschip is attested later than jacht (yacht), it is often supposed to be the older form; for one, it explains the neuter gender of jacht.[1]

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): /ˈjɑxt.sxɪp/
  • Hyphenation: jacht‧schip

Noun

edit

jachtschip n (plural jachtschepen, diminutive jachtscheepje n)

  1. (now uncommon and often historical) A yacht (light, fast vessel), in particular a sailing yacht.
    Synonyms: jacht, jachtschuit

Derived terms

edit
  • jacht (yacht) (see etymology above)
