Etymology

edit

Of unknown origin.[1]

Petersson connects the word to kedė́ti (to burst); according to Fraenkel, the basic meaning of the root underlying the words would have to be something along the lines of "splinter" or "chip".[2] This is semantically untenable.

Despite Buck,[3] Latvian ķeda (spindle) is likely not related, instead being borrowed from Finno-Ugric (compare Estonian kedr (id)).[2]
