jászkeszeg (Leuciscus idus)

Etymology

edit

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *kećä (a kind of fish). Cognate with Northern Mansi [script needed] (kāsəw). Possibly a Wanderwort. Compare Ossetian кӕсаг (kæsag), Georgian ქაშაყი (kašaq̇i).

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): [ˈkɛsɛɡ]
  • Hyphenation: ke‧szeg
  • Rhymes: -ɛɡ

Noun

edit

keszeg (plural keszegek)

  1. bream, ide (several fishes of the genera Abramis and Leuciscus)

Usage notes

edit
  • Be careful not to mix it up with the ponty. Even though some fishes under each of these genera overlap, the keszeg is usually a bonier fish which lacks the humped back (but not always).
