Etymology

From an unattested *lagamas (laid, placed) + -inas (nominal suffix), the former component the present passive participle of an unattested *lagoti (to lie down), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *lágīˀtei (to lay (something)), from Proto-Indo-European *logʰ-éye-ti, causative of *legʰ- (to lie). Cognate with Latvian lagaža (den, bed), Proto-Slavic *ložìti (to lay).[1]
