Etymology 1

Uncertain. Either a zero-grade derivative of lëndë "wood, matter" (cf. dëllinjë vs. dullinjë, drënjë vs. drunjë, mëllenjë vs. mullenjë etc.), through a local variant lëndër, in which case related to Old Norse lundr "clump of trees, tree", or borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin lunter, luntrem; compare Romanian luntre, Italian londra.[1][2]
