Etymology

edit

megért (to understand) +‎ -et (causative suffix)

Pronunciation

edit
  • IPA(key): [ˈmɛɡeːrtɛt]
  • Hyphenation: meg‧ér‧tet
  • Rhymes: -ɛt

Verb

edit

megértet

  1. (transitive) causative of megért: to make someone understand (something) or make (something) understood, to clarify, to illuminate, to bring home (the person or other creature supposed to understand something is expressed with -val/-vel)
  2. (reflexively, as megérteti magát, with definite conjugation) to make oneself understood (e.g. in a foreign language)

Usage notes

edit

The past-tense forms of this verb are identical with the past-tense forms of megért (to understand), with the exception of the 3rd person singular indefinite, so one should always consider the possible homonyms. Normally the argument (e.g. a form of -val/-vel for the first sense or the specification of the language in the second) will make the meaning clear.
