From Middle Vietnamese 𪉴 (múôi), from Proto-Vietic *ɓɔːjʔ (“salt”). Cognate with North Central Vietnamese mói, Muong bỏi/vỏi and Arem bɑːjʔ. Compare also Proto-Katuic *ɓɔɔj (whence Pacoh boi).
