Etymology edit

From Vulgar Latin *mūsiu(m), from Latin mūsiō (cat). The origin of this latter is unknown but it is likely intended as from the (non rhotic) genitive of mūs (mouse) +‎ (agent noun suffix). Compare Italian micio.
