Unknown, probably affixed *jaṅ +‎ pa-, derived from Proto-Mon-Khmer *raaŋʔ (light, to shine) (compare to Khmer ស្រាង (sraang, to glimmer), Vietnamese rạng (to dawn), and Chinese (liàng, “bright; brilliant; radiant; loud and clear”)). Doublet of paḍaṅ.
