From Old Welsh paup, from Proto-Brythonic *pọb, from Proto-Celtic *kʷākʷos (compare Old Irish cách), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷeh₂-kʷo-; cognate with Old Church Slavonic какъ (kakŭ, what kind of) and Lithuanian kõks (what kind of).
