From Proto-Indo-European *pelHk-iH-h₂, related to Latvian peļķe (puddle), Latin palus (marsh), Sanskrit पल्वल (palvala, pool, pond), and possibly Ancient Greek πηλός (pēlós, mud, earth, clay).
