Compare Bolognese piaza (“square, market”), from Latin platēa (“courtyard, broad street”), from Ancient Greek πλατεῖα (plateîa) (ὁδός (hodós)) (plateia hodos, "broad street"), feminine of πλατύς (platús, “broad”), from Proto-Indo-European *plat-, *pla- (“flat, broad”). Doublet of pláza and placc.
