pitke
Serbo-Croatian edit
Adjective edit
pitke
- inflection of pitak:
Tocharian B edit
Etymology edit
Deadjectival from *pih₁d-s-ko-, a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *peyH- (“fat”), with a dental extension that also appears in Proto-Germanic *faitaz (“fat”).[1]
Noun edit
pitke m
Usage notes edit
For a long time, this term has been interpreted as referring to spittle, spit, or saliva. This has been challenged by Pan (2019)'s examination of Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese texts parallel to passages where pitke appears. Pan proposes that it instead refers to fat and oil.
