Serbo-Croatian
editAdjective
editpitke
- inflection of pitak:
Tocharian B
editEtymology
editDeadjectival from *pih₁d-s-ko-, a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *peyH- (“fat”), with a dental extension that also appears in Proto-Germanic *faitaz (“fat”).[1]
Noun
editpitke m
Usage notes
editFor a long time, this term has been interpreted as referring to spittle, spit, or saliva. This has been challenged by Pan (2019)'s examination of Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese texts parallel to passages where pitke appears. Pan proposes that it instead refers to fat and oil.
