From Middle High German rüeren, from Old High German hruorjan, from Proto-Germanic *hrōzijaną (to stir, move), from *hrōzaz (active, stirring). Cognate with German rühren, Dutch roeren, English rear, Icelandic hræra, Swedish röra.
