From Middle Welsh raw, from Proto-Brythonic *rrọβ̃ (compare Cornish rêv, Middle Breton reuf), from Proto-Celtic *rāmyos (“oar”) (compare Old Irish rámae), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁reh₁- (“to row”).
