Etymology 1

From Middle Dutch ruchte, rochte. An early derivation equivalent to roepen (to call, shout) +‎ -t (verbal noun); the sound change -pt- to -ft- is primitive (Primärberührung; compare bruiloft), and -ft- subsequently yielded -cht- through regular Dutch sound change (compare gracht).
