FinnishEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Finnic *sarvi (compare Estonian sarv), from the same Proto-Finno-Ugric *śorwa as Hungarian szarv, which in turn is a loan from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćr̥wa, compare Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬏 ‎(srū, horn, claw, talon), 𐬯𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬁 ‎(srvā, horn), Middle Persian slwb' ‎(srū, horn, nail), Persian سرو ‎(surū, animal horn). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂-; see there for more.
