Inherited from Ottoman Turkish سوق ایتمك (sevḳ etmek, to drive, to send, to incite),[1] from Arabic سَوْق (sawq, driving, mobilization), verbal noun of سَاقَ (sāqa, to drive, to conscript, to pilot),[2] equivalent to sevk +‎ etmek.
